America's Favorite Pastime and Steroids

Most fans who followed the great game of baseball in the 1980s, or what has now become known as the steroid era, are very unhappy. These fans feel that they were misled by everyone in baseball, including the players, owners and the union. Some sports fans are saying, "There is more going on in the courts than on the field. It's a bad soap opera." A statement like that sums up what a majority of sports fans think of the steroid era. A recent Marist poll stated that 70% of Americans think that a player who uses steroids, should not be elected into the Hall of Fame.

The Mitchell report lists 124 players who have tested positive of performance enhancing drugs. The biggest names in baseball have turned great careers upside down, with performances tainted by their alleged or confirmed steroid use. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriquez are the some of baseballs all time greats that have fallen in the eyes of many baseball fans.

Think of all the plays that once had fans cheering, only to be revealed as examples of dishonesty and chemical dependency. It seems some modern players just can’t compete with the great players of times gone by without a little “boost” from their good friend steroids. Not even the brute force that steroid injected muscles can produce will make fans forgive or forget the numerous downfalls of athletes who tried to be rock stars, instead of sports stars.
