Evidently, there are people who uphold the work of Joe Arpaio, the Sheriff of Maricopa County, and some who are questioning the quality of the work and the measures that he has taken in law enforcement. Since taking over the position of Sheriff, there have been many needed improvements starting with the convictions and deportations of illegal aliens. There are numerous illegal aliens that are being held in jails while awaiting deportation because of offenses they have committed, some of which are felony crimes. The crimes include forgery, drug charges, thefts and more.
In addition to the human smuggling netting being a success, he has also come up with animal control solutions, banned smoking and prohibited pornographic magazines inside the jails. Sheriff Joe implemented chain gangs putting inmates to work on county and city projects. He also put women on the chain gangs so that no one could say he was being sexually biased.
There are some people that are not happy with his methods because they may not have been legal means to achieving his goals. Some feel that the removal of cable access violates the Federal Court Order that requires the jails to have cable access. Although, after reinstatement of the cable, Sheriff Joe limited the channel access to only G-rated viewing of channels such as Disney and The Weather Channels. It is no doubt that the gritty and gutsy lawman has grabbed the attention of many people. Sheriff Joe has reduced undesirable behavior with his tough methods. Some of the changes he made with the bans of different luxuries inside the jails may even make for a safer workplace for the officers. Taxpayers are especially happy because the bans may have saved them in excess of $20,000.
