Irony is defined as a situation where what is said is different than what is meant. The results are often funny or leave someone scratching their head over the actual meaning. For example, people will often say something is “clear as mud.” In this case, the words and the meaning are opposite from each other. Another example is saying that something on a ship is cargo and things traveling by road is a shipment.
There are often ironic things that we notice as we go about our daily lives. Some examples are a highway sign in front of a cemetery that says “dead end” or the road sign showing arrows pointing both left and right, but the road only goes straight. Some clever hunters put a sign over the door to their duck hunting lodge that says “fowl language spoken here.”
Other examples of irony include having a fly land in your chardonnay, or a death row inmate receiving a governor's pardon a few minutes too late (because he would be dead by that time). Perhaps it would rain on your wedding day, which you were already late to, but got a free ride. Irony could be having upwards of 10,000 spoons, but you really don't need any spoons; you need a knife. Lastly, you could meet the man or woman of your dreams, but then you meet his or her wife or husband.
There are funny signs and sayings and occurrences all over the world, not just in the United States, so keep your eyes open as you go about your daily life!
