I am on a two-week vacation. Part of it was spent in my hometown in Connecticut, and this last part is in Ann Arbor, MI, my home for 16 and a half years until a move to the west coast almost 3 years ago.
My trip to Connecticut was great. Lots of family, old friends, old haunts. However, the driving around presented a bit of a challenge. Some of the two-way streets I remember are now one-way, and some of the one-way street now go the other way! This is where I realized what a creature of habit I am. I just didn't expect things like this to happen.
A trip to the cemetary - a social event for an Italian - also proved challenging. I knew my grandmother was near the spigot-on-a-pole when I turned down this one particular road. After not being able to find the spigot, I realized that I couldn't even find the road! It seems that property is so precious there, that they dug up the road to squeeze in a few extra people-at-rest. So now my landmark was gone. This then snowballed as I looked for my other "peeps". Curves in the road that were landmarks for me had been changed - where are my uncles? Certain unique shrubs had been removed, statues of Mary had toppled - where are my parents? No more relying on those dependable things of the past. Can you mapquest your ancestors??
