After 30 years of marriage, and the announcement by the Spousal Unit that he is not happy, I am almost at the end of a divorce. Yes, the 'D' word, which I never thought would happen to me, may turn out to be the most liberating thing in the world.
Without any serious discussion about how to improve things between us, he decided he was done. It's mostly my fault, says he, because I am emasculating. How was I to know that wanting to paint a bedroom would translate into, "No house I ever buy you is good enough" or that reminding him he had a dentist's appointment would make me a nagging witch? And, oh yes, by the way, he had an affair, but it didn't make him feel better and it was over. And I believed him. Did he confess this is an effort to be truthful? Nope, I found emails. I had to translate them into English!
I used to encourage him to take good care of his skin and teeth because we were getting older and he laughed because that was stupid. Now he has his teeth whitened professionally and get facials! Really, he could use Botox on his forehead between his eyebrows where he has creases like the Grand Canyon but I would NEVER say that to him because I thought it would be rude!
So now more of the truth has come out in the past few days - I think I wore him down because he finally admitted to me that it went on way longer than the dates on the emails. And he admitted her true age. We used to laugh at the old man checking into a hotel with his MUCH younger "niece". Now he IS that guy, almost 59 with a 30-year-old girlfriend. She may be learning English soon, as might her 14 year old daughter... if they can ever get into the country. Men - why do they have to BE the stereotypes? You know, there may be a job opening soon for him as the governor of South Carolina. Why, heck, he could be President!!
