While volunteering the other day, the youngsters (some great girls in their mid- to late-twenties) and I got a little silly while doing a massive cleaning out of files and desk drawers. After accumulating quite a pile of paper clips, I spouted that well-known quote, "No more wire hangers!" Their little heads whipped around as they asked me what in the world I was talking about since there was not a wire hanger in sight. And so I told them "it was a famous quote from the book about Joan Crawford". That its when it happened.... they asked, "Who is Joan Crawford and what are you talking about?"
I replied that she was a really famous actress around the same time as Bette Davis, and then I told them the wire hanger story. And then it happened again. They asked me, "Who is Bette Davis?" OMG (I love internet-speak) - there is a HUGE hole in their education. I worry about their lack of cultural references. They worry about me being nuts. I guess it's a trade-off.
