Christmas, when you have so little family nearby, can be pitiful. But one of my kids was here and we had some great fun. Sure there were less presents because the economy sucks and really, we all have so much stuff, but the most fun part was Christmas Day and The Grab Bag.
So we drove an hour to the home of friends - there were 18 of us. The rules for the Christmas Grab Bag were: a $25 dollar limit, and follow the theme of "As Seen On TV". You know those ads we all see as we get up to get a snack during a show. There was an argument over how to distribute the gifts. Do we take a number, or do we roll the dice and the first person who gets doubles... and THAT is when the wine kicked in and the yelling started. It was so funny to see adult kids yelling at their parents about what is the right way to do it! So back we went to drawing a number and the rules were that a gift can be 'stolen' twice. So strategizing started amongst the 'kids'. It seems EVERYONE wanted a Snuggie, all the girls wanted the Bumpits and other hair accessories, no one wanted the Topsy-Turvy Tomato Planter, and the men were looking longingly at the Auto Dent Remover. There was a laptop holder, complete with a tiny lamp and a drink holder, an egg shaped can opener, a veggie chopper, battery operated slippers (why? I don't know.), a thing that lets you apply lotion to your own back and a few other thing I have NEVER seen on TV.
We all had a good laugh. A 14 year old ended up with the dent remover, a guy ended up with the hair stuff and someone who had too much wine STILL thinks the lotion applicator is a back scratcher and the coolest thing he's ever seen. Personally, I bet we see these same presents rear their ugly heads next year!!
