Learning to Laugh at Yourself

Have you ever looked at someone who has learned to laugh at themselves and noticed how happy they are? In a world that seems to be full of negativity, this can be surprising.  When you ask them how they can manage to be so happy, most of them will say something similar to "I just learned to laugh at myself and not dwell on things." This is a simple explanation that seems much harder than it sounds.

Learning to laugh at yourself makes everything seem less serious. Problems and bumps along the road seem to be easier to face, and you can be much happier if you find the funny side  Instead of looking at a problem and assuming that everything about it is negative, try to find a few positive things that are coming from it. For example, if you have to take a day off work because your child is sick with strep throat, think of it as having more time to bond with your child instead of nuisance.

There is almost always a funny part to every situation. Why be worried about dropping a plate and breaking it? You can either be upset and throw it away or crack a quick joke and throw it away. Instead of being worried when it breaks, look up at everyone and yell "Opa!" like Greeks do during celebrations. This is sure to make everyone laugh, and also diffuse the tension almost immediately! Learning to laugh at yourself is a great medicine for life in general. It makes life more bearable, fun, and subsequently makes you a much more fun person to be around.
