Situational Irony
Situational irony is defined at Dictionary.com as "an outcome that turns out to be very different from what was expected; the difference between what is expected to happen and what actually does." While this definition is somewhat accurate, it is certainly confusing and lacks a good example.
A proper explanation is needed for someone to really understand what situational irony is. In layman's terms situational irony is a situation when the outcome is odd or unfair but can be somewhat amusing as well. For example, if the President of the US was entered into a contest and won a free, exclusive home makeover it would be ironic. The President doesn't need a home makeover, he lives in one of the most amazing houses in America! Also, he can already get anything he wants changed. The irony is that he had just as much chance as of winning as other people who entered the contest. It could be frustrating to people who entered the contest but it also could be amusing if they stepped back and looked at it.
Learning to recognize situational irony can make difficult times in life much easier. Being able to laugh when things go wrong can make it easier to overcome. Instead of being a horrible ordeal, it can be a situation to laugh at and move on. There is no need to be down on yourself over things that can no longer be changed. Learn from mistakes, laugh at the comical parts of life, move on and become a better person!
